About AGRED - History

The African Gamebird Research, Education and Development Trust (AGRED) was founded in 1990 by Peter Johnson Hon. F.P.P.S.A., F.B.I.P.P., F.R.P.S., an environmental author and professional wildlife photographer.

To date, AGRED has made substantial gains resulting from scientific research projects it has funded and managed. These include projects on: the Greywing francolin in the eastern Cape; the Redwing francolin in Mpumalanga; the Namaqua sandgrouse in the Kalahari; Egyptian geese in the western Cape and Guineafowl in KwaZulu-Natal.

AGRED has also achieved the following:

• Sponsored five Ph.D degrees in Ornithology
• Formulated habitat management guidelines for commercial farmland
• Developed training programmes for indigenous tour guide operators
• Coordinated activities with related organisations
• Encouraged the monitoring of gamebird breeding seasons
• Initiated the production of a Gamebird ID and Habitat Handbook

As credibility and results increase, so does international support for AGRED’s efforts.

The AGRED Foundation USA

In early 1997, Eric & Mary Fletcher, and Sissy LaVigne decided to initiate a tax-exempt foundation to provide financial support for the Trust’s efforts in Southern Africa. They enlisted the assistance of several friends who shared their passions for wingshooting, conservation and Africa, and on June 8, 1997, held the first Board Meeting of the AGRED Foundation. With an international network of friends and supporters, and an experienced Board of Directors, the Foundation’s ongoing efforts are in support of it’s mission: Establish a long-term endowment fund to financially support the Trust’s objectives in Africa.
